I'm not "encouraging" anybody to dump their security. You need
to know what you're doing. And I do maintain several layers of
security, and keep lots of tools to deal with mishaps. I
manually OK *every* change to the Windows registry. A program
runs in background that flags execution of malware (actually
triggers about once a year). Norman Virus Control scans
incoming emails and files that are written to disk for the first
time (triggers once in two years). What I don't do is maintain
any sort of software firewall, run regular checks of my hard
disks, or stop any programs from running that some lame-brain
security system thinks might conceivably be dangerous. I like
things that warn me. I hate things that inhibit me. I go crazy
when I get on other people's machines, because they ALL have
tons of restrictions. Fear is the worst virus of all.
