How is that an improvement on simply keeping copies of the Profile
folder?

You can back up all the Firefox settings with MozBackup:

It makes a little *.pcv file that you can copy onto (in my case) a
thumb drive and restore or move to new machine. Recently it proved
quite handy when I mistakenly deleted all my saved passwords with
one click.

I've found this 'hidden' file,
bookmarks.html
go to
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data
\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\51qr442j.default\
the last dir is random named
