There is a way in W98 to keep the alt keys from being pre-empted
(presumably): in the properties box for the shortcut un-check the
keystroke combinations you want kept from the OS for the program (XY)
you're going to use.

NI does not pass the keystroke, usually just the next function, to the
operating system. Alt keys, for example, are generally used by the OpSys
for a
variety of things. In TABLE=ALT, you (supposedly) can prevent the keystroke
from being interpreted by the OS. Thus, if you assigned something to Alt-H,
you wouldn't get a Windows Help screen. It doesn't always work; some
keystrokes are simply pre-empted (intercepted) by the OS, like Alt-Enter,
Alt-Tab, etc.
