I would also welcome such an option, but while we're waiting, it may be
useful to know that much-maligned MS Word for Windows <*caveat*>
provides a nifty feature starting with version 2000 (not in earlier
versions): if you have a text file such as a XyWrite file that contains
upper-ASCII (128 - 255) characters, simply ask Word to open it. Up pops
a dialog box with a preview window that lets you specify what kind of
file it is. Play a bit with the available options and select the right
flavor of DOS. (The preview window makes this easy.) Voila, Word opens
the file and converts upper-ASCII into ANSI on the fly. Umlauts et al
come out correctly, and even the Xy guillemets look like, well, proper
duck feet.
<*caveat*>
My experience is based on the _Japanese_ (double-byte aware) version of
Word 2000, so I don't know for sure whether this applies to
other-language versions as well, but I would assume that it does.
