The problem is precisely that ASCII is no longer the common
denominator. Almost all Windows programs use an ANSI character
set instead. The letters and numbers are the same, but a lot of
the rest is different.
If the text is not heavily formatted, use the RTF filter instead
of the Word filter. XYDOS outputs it directly with the Save As
command. In my experience, its output in other formats tends to
work better than inputting with the other program. For instance,
saving as HTML preserves footnotes as endnotes (which is as close
as you can come in an HTML file), whereas outputting as Word or
RTF and importing into Word 97 and saving as HTML loses the
footnotes entirely.
Just give the RTF file to the self-proclaimed tech expert and see
if it works with Quark Express.
