Then you're doing something wrong. The AUTOEXEC certainly,
absolutely works.
Agreed, it does work. But isn't it the case that autoexec.nt
processes only some Dos commands, not the full range that would have
been accepted in the old autoexec.bat ("if," for example)? Some that
definitely work are "set," "path," and "call," but some experimenting
may be worthwhile.
I'd be glad to hear more on this topic from anyone who knows more.
