Nor does this copy editor. Parens in print mean 'Reader, you can
skip the words enclosed here.'

Just try to express that aside while speaking in the open air.

PS About another mark: semicolons can be good, bad, or indifferent.
Some authors can insert them smoothly in dialogue; some can't.

I suspect that playwrights are familiar with their use & abuse.
