There is a way to do what you want (in Xy4), here is how it goes:
Highlight (Select, define, whatever) ONE formatting triangle.
Go to the command line and type "ch /", then press
CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-C, this copies the selected text to the command
line. Then replace all the stuff in between the " " with a
CTRL-ALT-W (wildcard for any string).
Then just finish the command line string with nothing to replace.
You should end up with something like this: ch /"W"//
(BTW, the "'s and the W show up in Xy4/DOS as yellow text on a
red background)
Put the cursor at the beginning of the doc and press F9, no more
triangles!
