Harry,
In your case, stand with standard XyWrite. Regarding to you questions,
European characters are a problem in plain ASCII files.
Usually, I use Ventura tags instead of XyWrite codes but it's very easy
to automatically replace them in both directions. Obviously, Ansified
XyWrite manages ≪MDBO≫, ≪IP5,0≫ and so on.
