Absolutely. Do it all the time. I recommend using REad instead
of CAll (or EDit) to open additional instances of a file, to
insure that editing is confined to the original window.
Otherwise, keeping track of changes becomes a nightmare. I use
this technique to answer email: keep a read-only copy of the
message I'm replying to in one window (to grab quotes from), write
the reply in the adjacent screen. (To send my reply, I simply
DeFine it and issue M2, but that's another story.)

Conversely, when you need to edit the same file in different
places simultaneously, the tool of choice is Robert Holmgren's
SideBySide. SBS lets you work on two views of the same file in
adjacent screens, and ensures that changes in one window are
automatically reflected in the other window when you toggle to it.
Highly recommended.
