It's not a ploy, it's a marketing strategy that consumers prefer. And I'm
much happier paying for ink based on usage than shelling out a lot for a
printer. It's not just the higher upfront dollar cost: it makes a lot be at
stake in a printer-buying decision, so at a higher price I'd have to spend
a lot of time researching which is best. The way it is now, I can buy a
cheap printer and if it isn't up to snuff, I can junk it and buy a new one.
