I have a paid Dropbox account and use the Dropbox folder on my hard disk
for all current documents. Every saved version is recoverable from the
Dropbox web site, and the current version is always on my disk. There
are no downsides.
Someone is sure to post a long message warning you about the risks of
exposing your data to the cloud. Of course don't leave your bank account
passwords or confidential information in the cloud without heavy
encryption. But if, like me, you don't really care all that much about
the risk of some villain taking the trouble to access the drafts of your
scholarly essays, then there are no downsides.
