Thanks, Harry.

While the *main* .spl file is not user editable (it is, as David
mentioned, a binary file), the personal dictionaries, which are text
files, should be editable. Indeed, the user manual for XyWrite III Plus,
at 3-75 gives instructions for creating and editing a personal
dictionary.

As I recall, the .spl files are NOT user editable. So what David says is

the only solution: copy over intact .spl files from wherever they are
(and
she must have a backup of her system with them on it).
