Excellent news! Knowing that old DOS stuff does still come in handy,
doesn't it?

I think, I think I found the solution, while waiting for an
answer. Using PkZip for DOS, the only reasonable OS, as far
as I am concerned, I issued the following command:
pkzip -&fu c:\xy4\*.*
It took 5 diskettes. I compressed everything, including the
HLP file and Editor.exe. It worked well. I think that I
could have gotten away with omitting the "f" option.
This is an easy way to transport one's latest "versions" of all
of the XY4 files to a new computer, or a new old computer.
Many thanks for your offer of help, but there is nothing that
sharpens the mind like the need to do something.

P.S.: For what it is worth, IBM2TIF.exe must not be a necessary
file, since I don't have it in my directory, and everything appears
to work well.

First _copy_ the editor.exe to one floppy. No point in compressing it.
You won't save very much space. Then, there's another exe file
IBM2TIF.EXE. I have no idea what that's for. I have never used it.
Hopefully Carl will tell us all what it is and whether it's still
needed. If so, copy it to another floppy.
Then compress everything else but the help file. You may want to divide
this into files starting A-H, I-M, etc. That way you should have four
*.zip files and you can evaluate how many more floppies you need.
This will also give you a chance to clean out the folder. Amazing what
you might be able to delete when you concentrate on that, yes?
Finally, sigh, the help file must be dealt with. You will probably have
to compress it across two floppies. This can be done with the old dos
version of PKZip, but I'm afraid that I must quote Bismarck here, "there
were only three people who understood that [treaty]. Two are dead. I am
the third, and I have forgotten."
But seriously, the odds are excellent that Carl or Patricia or Harry
have not.
Hope this helps.

I'd like to copy my XY4 directory, compressed (using Pkzip,
or some similar programme), on to 1.44 floppies. Obviously,
this will require that I produce more than one ZIPped file.
What is the most economical way of doing this? I though of
creating one giant ZIPped file and the split it into segments
of appropriate length, but I find that re-uniting the segments
does not always work, at least, not using the programme that
I have available. Is there another way?
