adding tilde to kbd file

i am running xy4dos 4.017 under linux and wish to add the tilde to
shift+key 41 in my kbd file. i am using the xy4-3.kbd file. i have
tried ctrl-alt 730 (the xywrite character), ctrl-alt 152 (the ascii
character), either on the number pad or on the other numbers, but they
don't work.
what happens is that other characters are printed on the
command line or at the head of the kbd file rather than in the place i
have put the cursor which is at 41 in the table=shift.
i have also tried it using the menu under 'insert > other
> special character,' as suggested by shawn, and then i get a message,
when i try to save the kbd file, that says it does not recognize the character.
i would love some advice.
thank you.
