So, for the moment, I'm waffling -- NB (still a bit quirky compared to
XY) or XyDos on my T41 (XP PRO) in full screen with either Ultravision
or a program Carl has mentioned frequently, Fontman? I think. Of
course, there's still a chance one of us will find a cure - some
utility or undocumented toggle in WIN - for XY's problems in XP's
DosBox.
I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I know that there are at least a
few of us that are using XY on a Mac via Virtual PC.
I just wanted to reaffirm that I am using XY, under IBM's DOS 2000, via
Virtual PC 6.0. (The last version before MS bought Connectix.)
I have never been happier with this decision. Back in 1998 I decided
that i wasn't happy with the direction that MS was taking business
wise. They were not going to change their business practices and their
software, IMO, was not going to get any better. That was also when i
first realized that they cared little for me or the programs that i
still cherished and used that ran under DOS. It was then that i decided
that i would look for other solutions.
Apple, and specifically OS X, was appealing to me as Unix, as an
underlying OS, is a more time tested and robust OS. As the OS was
supported by Apple, there was a greater chance of it running Virtual
PC, an application already running on their Mac OS 9.
While i have a G4 cube that i paid a lot for. My current machine for
personal use is a Powerbook Pismo that i bought used on ebay for around
$600 dollars. I mention this as most people automatically assume a Mac
is extravagantly priced.
This has been a great laptop for me. I take it to work and use it there
and at home. I run the latest version of OS X (10.3.3). I am connected
wirelessly on a 802.11G connection. I am doing my work using XY that i
convert to Framemaker via a script i wrote, all on a G3 400Mhz CPU.
Xy is in its own DOS window and the speed and response is wonderful. I
am able to use the tools i love and am also able to show MS that i am
not happy with their products and their business practices, and still
able to do my job, using the tools i love, and much more!
Just another opinion!
Thanks
