You might want to take a look at the later versions ported to
OS/2 --- I use it for a text editor, since it allows me to see
things in the text that XY keeps hidden, like Word Perfect junk,
but it is a tremendously customizable editor. You can assign
whole Lisp or Perl (or whatever, I think) programs to a key or key combinations.
And I think a wysiwyg is close at hand, certainly you can combine
it with LaTex to achieve that.
