BUT, the PC is designed for proper cooling air flow across the innerds
with the case ON!
Nahhh. That used to be true, in the 80s, but I don't think it is anymore.
And even if it were true, you could easily overcome it by putting a little
tape around the whole through which you run the cable.
Y'all are making too much of this thing. Computers aren't delicate. Cut
into the case with a saw, or leave your case wide open, put the hard drive
on the rug, or stand it up next to the case, turn it anywhich way up, none
of it matters.
And as to component life, how long do you own a computer for today? New
tower computers are a few hundred dollars.
Now SOFTWARE, that's a different thing altogether ... very delicate and
very long held.
