I think Harry is basically right, but why not open the case and leave
the
hard drive inside? (I didn't have a convenient mount, so I held the hard
drive down with bent coat hanger wire and paper clips.)
Because for each backup, you have to put on the cables, then take them
off when you're done (rebooting in between, of course), and you don't
want to have to open the case to do that.

BUT, the PC is designed for proper cooling air flow across the innerds
with the case ON! Removing the case redirects to some extent the air
flow. I know it is a consideration, but I am sorry I don't know how
serious it is. It would certainly depend on the particular PC design.
The primary risk from component overheating, I think, is a shortened
life of critical components while the secondary risk is erratic
component behavior and all that could lead to.
