weirdness with new install of VDOS-XY / XY4

A first poster on this list, but a steady user of XyWrite since version II Plus.

Have been happily using Xy4.018 with VDOSPlus-Xy for several years, and migrated the setup to several new computer builds without much difficulty. Last week I installed the combination on a new PC (Intel  11th gen, Win10) and instantly ran into some of the screwiest errors I’ve ever seen.

After startup the F5 and F9 keys return error messages scrolling in the top banner. Here is a sample:

There is no macro assigned   cannot compare number to a string «VA$VE» =>

"V4.1"! «VA634» < «VA$SW» - «PV631» -1       … there’s more I didn’t catch

So it’s XPL, but doing something God knows what. Sometimes ctrl-scroll lock stops it, sometimes not. But the behavior is constant throughout the session interrupting use of the keyboard.

If I omit a startup.int, use a naked unconfigured xywrite, this behavior doesn’t happen, but try to do common actions with it in that state and it is likely to freeze the screen. If I add even 1 line to a startup.int, the F5 problem returns. As usual my startup has a long list of configuration items, and I’m a regular – and grateful – user of xywwweb.U2, so my first thought was one of those was causing the problem, so I REMmed out lines one by one on the startup file  until 1 was left, and then switched it out for another, and the problem persisted.

This was with VDOSPlus 501. Uninstalled that and installed v. 500. No difference. So I’m baffled about how to troubleshoot this, and hoping some of the Solons on this list might have an idea. Thanks,
