You are right about this. For example, NB3 menus have all kinds of
amenities in the search and replace area but Signature does not. What
works in this case is the Signature command line, and it was carried
over to XY4 more or less as is. The difference of Signature and XY4 menu
structure became evident to me when I tried to make a mini-service pack
for Signature (e.g. Options, Insert Other, Special Character, Accented
Characters, etc.). The menu code is less developed and different.

One problem with Signature was an incomplete menu system. If I remember
correctly, you could insert a footnote from the menu, but, if deltas
were not visible, a beginning user wouldn't have a menu-driven way to
remove a footnote after inserting it. At least this is what memory
reports from ancient history.
