Carl, Wonderful, a long-time dream (XyWrite on any OS)! Wondering how XyBasic will fit in. I was having Claude make a translator: XyBasic to Python (and back). Then, in actual XyWrite, XyPy can execute Python. But it seems like it's getting Baroque. --Harry On Wed, 17 Jun 2026 16:19:21 -0400, Carl Distefano wrote: > Reply to note from harrybinswanger <dmarc-noreply@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Tue, 16 Jun 2026 18:42:29 -0400 > > Harry, > > > how is XyScript coming? > > It's starting to take shape. The project is an order of magnitude more complex than QuickNotes, so I'm taking my time. I'm building in features that I've always wanted, which I hope will interest other XyWriters as well. These include: > > -- Multilingual capability: UTF-8 as the default encoding, with the ability to display and/or convert to other encodings; multiple languages in a single document > > -- Flexible keyboard handling: keys not mapped in a KBD file take input from the operating system, so installed keyboards, macro utilities, IME character selection, etc. remain at your disposal > > -- Modern XPL scripting: plain-text commands, expanded command set, optional background operation (run multiple scripts simultaneously), native interoperability with the OS (scripts can take input from shell commands and write to stdout, output from external processes can be piped into a document) > > The underlying philosophy is, "It's all XPL" -- a single syntax that works on the CMline, in the KBD file, and in scripts. So you can do things like: paste an entire script into the CMline and hit Enter to run it; or have KBD-file assignments that implement "smart" Home and End keys: > > 71=IF $CX==0;HM;ELSE;LB;EI > ... > 79=SET pos=$CP;LE;IF $pos==$CP BS > > And more... > > -- > Carl Distefano > cld@xxxxxxxxxx > |
