You're right on both counts. The footer is a single line that repeats on at the bottom of each page
of the printout. And the text of the footer is determined by the PVFOOTER command, either issued on
the command line or in an XPL script; it does not appear in the text of the document itself.
To get what you're after here -- "a multi-line footnote with a line in italic" -- in a
XyScript markdown (.md) document, I think your best bet is to insert the note manually where you
want it to appear. (Markdown does have a footnote usage, but it's not well-implemented in XyScript
-- I can look into that.)
What I recommend doing for preview/printout settings generally is to collect all of the relevant
settings a file -- I call it "print-cfg.xpl" (see below). Edit the settings as desired,
then RUN the file (it's an XPL script) to enable them. I maintain multiple print settings files for
different printing tasks, with descriptive names, like "article-printout-settings.xpl".
This way, you're not reinventing the wheel every time.
