Re: XPL to xpl

Carl,

I hear you. At this point, I'm not sure what is the best investment of my time. The "silver platter" or just have Claude (and me) learn the new xpl. I favor the latter, out of context. But already having myself scattered among a growing list of interesting things to do, probably I should stick with the "get it done inelegantly" approach.

Our era is not just one of information overload but values overload.

On CU vs. FOR, do I understand that your criticism is that FOR does what CU does but so much more? Wouldn't that still warrant replacing any XyWrite XPL-CU with XyScript-xpl FOR? (And by "syntactic sugar" you mean it was a more compact way of doing what we already did more verbosely in Xy 3+?)

So beware lest you chain yourself to a past that has ... passed you by. That said, your list is basically ok, with the glaring exception of "«CU» FOR". CU is syntactic sugar for doing X, Y number of times. Yes, FOR does that, but much more: it can iterate over the characters in a string and the elements in an array, and do something *different* each time. Those elements can themselves be arrays; FOR can reach down into the elements of those subarrays.

Then (and only then), let Claude figure out how to translate between the two. In a perfect world, Claude would advise you to learn a bit of xpl on your own. What you'd find is that it's now easier to do all sorts of things that XPL forced you to jump through hoops to do, not to mention the universe of things that XPL is simply unable to do. Up to you.
