Re: Old user seks new advice

I am enclosing as attachment a TTG document about XyWindows 4.12
installation. Believe me: it works.

I can't remember special problems with XyDos installation. Obviously it is necessary to perform it in plain DOS 7.0 or 6.0 (not from Windows 95). If you are a Windows user, please reboot the machine in plain DOS (just press F8 at startup and follow the menu).

INSTALLING XYWRITE FOR WINDOWS (4.11 OR 4.12) ON WINDOWS 95. Use this procedure if you get error messages during the normal installation method. (Which is to type A:\INSTALL from Windows Run dialog screen.) first part of install procedure: 1) from win 95 click on "start" button, then select the "shutdown" option. choose "restart the computer in ms dos mode." 2) once in dos, change to the c drive root directory by typing cd c:\ 3) create a new directory at the c prompt (c:\>) by typing md xw4 (this will create the directory c:\xw4)msg13626.html 4) change to the a:\ directory by typing a: at the prompt. 5) copy all the diskettes (in reverse order) into the c:\xw4 directory. insert xywrite disk #4 into the floppy drive and type: copy *.* c:\xw4 when you have finished copying this diskette, insert and copy into the same directory diskettes #3, #2 and #1. you will be asked "do you want to overwrite a file...." reply: yes 6) after you have copied all the diskettes into the c:\xw4 directory, you must turn off the computer completely. once off, turn back on. when the message appears, "starting windows 95", press the f8 key. this will bring up the startup menu. note:if you are unable to stop win 95 from starting automatically, you must reboot and press f8 again. second part of the install procedure: you will need to do a step-by-step confirmation of drivers and commands to load just the bare necessities for system operation. 1) after pressing f8 you must choose from the startup menu: "step-by-step confirmation." you will be asked a series of questions. reply to the questions as shown below: 2) for the most part these are the standard questions that are asked. if you are unsure of a particular question--reply: no a) process the system registry? yes b) process the startup.log file? yes c) process your startup device drivers (config.sys)? yes d) c:\dos\himem.sys or c:\windows\himem.sys? yes e) if you have the line: c:\windows\ifs.hlp.sys? reply: yes f) process your startup command file (autoexec.bat)? no g) load the windows graphical user interface? no (this loads the cd-rom driver which will cause a conflict with xywrite's install procedure.) h) at the dos prompt type: win /d:m (starts win 95 in safemode) 3) you will be notified that you are running in safe mode. press ok to proceed. 4) go to "run" in windows and type c:\xw4\install. the install procedure should go smoothly. if you receive a "protection violation" message, just click "ok" rapidly until the box goes away. go to "run" again and try to install again. you may have to try this several times before you are successful. 5) after xywrite has been installed, you can delete the xw4 directory. if you have any problems, please call the technical support line for the technology group.
