Sounds to me like some other variable is at play here. I run
Xy4DOS 4.018 under OS/2 Warp 4. I just took a DIR of one of the
program Dir.s on my NT app.s partition with Xy4. From here, the
CleanSweep directory is seen as  I:\PROGRA~1\CLEANS~1  making
it 2 levels of Tilde abbreviation down. No problem, as shown
below.
