Re: Grrr [OS2 and XY install]

" David Auerbach's frustration with XYW has to be expected. I too run
" OS/2, with XYDos running in a VDM. I keep it because (1) I don't want
" all the aggro of changing after using XYW since 1984, (2) it still is fast
" and reliable; but (1) anything more complex than a normal professional paper
" takes piles of time using the documentation (which is poorly indexed and is
" verbose), (2) it's a pain having to deal with inadequate import/export
" filters, and (3) there is a whole lot of change in the wp market which makes
" wp's considerably easier to use with more features.
------------
And I come back and see there is much controversy. See Win95s version
of Microsoft Word. Interesting but too big. I'll stay with Xy3+, OS/2 AND XY...
OS/2 guru Herb Tyson (author of XyWrite Revealed!, Your OS/2
consultant, Navigating the Internet with OS/2) still keeps XY3 and 4
on this OS/2 desktop.
You'll find David Rothman, who pushed XY3 in his laptop and
essential software books, and Art Campbell (author of XYwrite: Expert Advisor)
as well as the Saint Tyson are in the OS/2 Warp Sources and Solutions
book that came with Warp.

PREFERENCES
OS/2 works fine (except for long HPFS file names) with XY. XY is
fast, you can open multiple instances (10 windows times each instance),
or even run multiple XY programs on each instance while working in
yet another instance. Works good like a word processor should.

What the person above needs is a better set of pre-set templaates
for the other than usual academic troubles.
[So submit your layout requests and we'll see what's in the collective
 brilliance of XYwriters. say@xxxxxxxx ]

I confess that I use Word Perfect 5.2 or a spreadsheet for
some tables, PC-write 2.7 for some end of lines clean up etc.

And while I have XY4dos on the disk, I use XY3 for speed and
clean files. It's interface has been customized so that I can switch
to PCwrite or Chiwriter and not miss a beat--the key patterns are the
same.

XY4 INSTALL ....
	I too hated the XY4 install. I'm using a paper-white BW monitor
at this station with a colour ATI video card showing shades of grey, but
XY4 install colours meant that it wouldn't show up. I was installing blind,
doubly blind, since I didn't know what files were inside their hidden
archivers. What was I missing, I didn't know? This isn't unuusal,
OS/2 2.1 was also blind, but Warp wasn't.

But the TTG BBS has a list of all the files in a fully installed
XY4 and now I am assured. Though I don't like the growing size of files

WISHES....
Rothman used to chortle on how powerful a WP he had in 120K,
it was even put on a PCMIA card for the NEC Ultralite once. Now the
kernel is 600 K

	I wish:
based on the small XY3 kernel
	Speed
Better thesaurus (no one has one good enough, yet)
tys or ty to drive ghostscript to screen or pages,
		with draft quality the default.
	fitted on the smallest floppy (360k, 720 k, 1440 k...)
		at a minimum.
