My understanding of Wine and CrossOver is that they emulate a large number of Windows processes and
functions at a low enough level that most Windows programs will run. To write to the screen, access
a peripheral, parse a string, etc. the Windows program does exact what it normally does, and Wine or
CrossOver takes the calls and manipulates the OS (hardware too?) to produce the desired results. I
tend to think of that as a “Windows environment” even though it does not require the
installation of MS-Windows and even though it does not use the code you would find in MS-Windows.

My experience with both generic Wine and CrossOver is that they tend to be slower than current
versions of Parallels and VmWare running Win7 or 8. I don’t have any way of quantitatively
testing this, though, so I may simply be responding to keyboard and screen behaviour.

BTW: *Is* there any “automated” way to test performance speed for an installation of
XyWrite-DOS? I usually have to rely on my brain to sort it out after using a specific installation
for days or even weeks. I seem to respond most strongly to differences in keyboard response and
screen-(re)writing time.
