Tame boxes instead of carriage returns

The little boxes came back -- sometimes you see these rectangular boxes
instead of carriage returns, and sometimes you don't. Is there any way to
turn Tame off at least temporarily? I'm running XP with Service Pack 1 on a
Dell 8100 Inspiron laptop.
