Re: LEARNING XPL

Actually, while dBase IV is not much of a good language to learn with, I can
recommend Clipper. Clipper is a dBase clone but it is a compiled version not an
interpreted version. The language supports all of the modular constructs that I
am aware of. Give it a look see. The big thing about dBase type languages, or
4th generation languages, is that they handle the building of the data base
format for you. You don't have to worry about disk IO and stuff like that
unless you want to read and write non-dbase files. It probably is a little
pricy for just learning how to program, but if you have an application you need
to write and have to get something anyway, Clipper is a good bet. The BEST way
to learn your first language is probably to take a course at your local
college. If they have a reasonable DP program, they will teach it to you a bite
at a time and give you programming problems to try it out with.
