Re: italics

Nikki Meredith mentions losing ability to print italics when
switching from an unspecified printer to a Lexmark 5700.
Looks as though the new printer needs a new driver. The
problem with new printers is that printer driver
installation utilities (which I presume she tried) tend not
to know about them. The question is which driver she should
use.

1. Call Lexmark tech support and ask them what printer of
theirs available in late 1994 (my guess as to the date of XY
4.011) would use more or less the same driver as the 5700.
If there was no color deskjet then, this won't answer your
question, but it will provide a clue.

2. Call XyWrite tech support and ask them which driver they
suggest. The information from the first call may be helpful,
since chances are that TG stopped writing new printer
drivers for XyDOS some time ago.

3. If that doesn't solve the problem, look in the 5700's
printer manual for the italic codes, then go to the driver
you are using that works in other respects and substitute it
for the Deskjet italics code. The XY customization guide
explains how to do it. I didn't suggest this as first
choice, since it is likely that sooner or later other little
problems will come up that the printer's manual doesn't
cover.
