Discretionary Hyphen--again

Here's a weird one. I set ASC 127 (the "small house" or home plate) to be
my DH in SETTINGS.DFL, and assigned it to ALT- in my keyboard file. Works
fine in ordinary text, but in an endnote, the graphic (which Windoesn't,
I find, won't reproduce if I hold ALT and type 127 on the number pad,
though such other ASC chars as à [133] do work) comes up. Now granted,
it's a pretty long note (13 lines in 10 pt type X 6in wide), but that's
peanuts compared to some of the apparatus criticus I've edited. Same
problem in both XyDOS and XyWin. Any ideas as to why, and to a possible
workaround?

PS there is NO WAY I can go with the default DH of tilde; I sometime have
to use Spanish or Portuguese words and need tilde for them. Hmm, I could
though see if that yields the same results.
