Sort makes items disappear

Has anyone had this problem, which occurs on both my XP and W98 machines:
I have a list of filenames that I want to sort. They are in a vertical
column (i.e., nothing but each name followed by a CR-LF).
I define the whole set, from top to bottom, then issue the command SORT and
17 of the 37 disappear (I know this because I checked it out by putting a
in front of each.
I tried eliminating the periods in the filenames, but to no avail.
