RE: Report a Software Bug

Two hours' worth of research allows me to clarify the nature of (but
not the cause of) the first two bugs reported in my earlier message.

The controlling setting that gives rise to the bug appears to be the
default HY setting in XWSET.DFL: if it is set to the installation
default of "0" the program works properly.

If instead it is set to "1", then when buttons from the "table button
set" for either "Create snaking columns" or "Create table of cells" are
chosen, the program reacts improperly. Under this setting, clicking on
"Create snaking columns" returns a message box (even though I have MB=0
in the XWSET.DFL file) with the text set forth in my first e-mail.
Clicking on "Create table of cells" brings up the "Edit table" screen
instead of the "Create a Table" screen. After data is entered in the
"Edit table" series of screens, the "Cannot find item" message appears
on the status line (or if MB=1 then in two successive message boxes) as
noted in the earlier e-mail..

If after doing this the HY default is returned to "0", then the first
click on "Create table of cells" gives a message box of "Move the
insertion point to a column table./Then try this function again", and a
second click after clearing the message box yields the proper "Create a
table" box.

Evidently activating automatic hyphenation under XWWin under Win98 or
WINNT somehow interferes with the proper operation of the menuing system
(the XWU3 files) which TTG controls and operates, and which evidently is
the source of the described "bugs".

As for directing me to the UPenn forum group, I had previously sent an
inquiry last month, but no-one had a solution (although one user
reported similar experiences which he overcame by manually defining a
column table). TTG technical support was a fall-back.

As to the third bug, it has been widely reported in the UPenn forum that
XyWWin uses a non-Windows-standard clipboard which is often (although
not always) incompatible with other standard Windows programs. I do not
recall, however, anyone reporting that XyWrite would freeze up if you
attempt to copy from clipboard contents loaded in another program (in
this case Microsoft Outlook).

While it is easier to blow off a user tech-support bug report by (1)
telling someone to reload the program (which doesn't solve the bug
problem since HY=0 is the installation default) or (2) referring them to
the UPenn forum, it would be useful if the report were to be considered
seriously. Since (at least for the first two bugs) the problem appears
to be in one of the XWU3 files rather than in the editor program iteslf,
can you suggest a fix by modifying such files? If not, I am copying
this message to the UPenn forum so that perhaps someone there may be
able to help.

And you might advise whether any of these bugs might be resolved by TTG
otherwise for XyWWin or in the rumored SmartWords.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Paul Ambos
