re-installing Xy -- Win 95

I knew I should have written this down the last time it happened ... I had
to replace the hard drive on my Compaq Win 95 notebook computer. Now I'm
trying to re-install Xywrite (from DOS mode) and getting "DOS critical
error." It seems to me there was a way to bypass Windows altogether and
install from DOS...anyone remember?
