I've been surprised at some of the non-HP printers (inkjet) that get at

partial functionality out of one or another of the HP DeskJet printer files.

Your main problem may be Xy-3, which predates the big inkjet onslaught.
There is probably more to choose from in 4-series .PRN files, which aren't
really compatible with Xy-3.
