Yes. XyWrite, as you might expect, shows the user everything in the
file. However, many apps generate headers which the user never sees by
opening the files. This is how Macs, for example, recognize files
without extensions.
I have a nifty tool which show common file headers. See attached
screenshot of a JPEG file with its header revealed.
