The former. It's the price one pays for a very large font size. I
can also replicate the behavior you're seeing with Lucida Console
and large point sizes. But I still think that VASL is only
tangentially related to any of this. You set VASL where you want it;
then you play with the GUI font size until the (maximized) window
accommodates the chosen screen length (and gives you a point size
you can live with). Then you stick with those values.
