SmartSet v2.5

Xy4|XyWin Users:

It's been almost a year since the last version of SmartSet, so I
thought I'd post a new release. (Like roadwork in NYC or painting the
Golden Gate, SmartSet's always a work-in-progress, never actually
*done*. Unlike the roads in New York, however, it does actually,
I think, improve.)

You can download SmartSet v2.5 -- XPL Power Tools for XyWrite 4 and
XyWrite for Windows (SMARTS25.ZIP) -- from the TTG BBS, XyWrite Forum,
Files Section, User Uploads (area #7). Make sure you get the
filename with "25" (erroneously labeled v2.3, which I've asked
Kevin Duval to change), not "24" (the previous version, which
I've asked Kevin to delete). Shortly it'll also be available for
FTP here (Nathan, I snailed it to you; too wretchedly busy just
now to figure out a faster way.)

My recent preoccupation has been maximizing *continuity* between
editing sessions, and *portability* between computers. SmartSet
users already know SAVESESS, which saves the vital coordinates of
an unlimited number of editing session for easy retrieval; and
LOADEVAR, which loads the contents of DOS environment variables
to Save/Gets, enabling soft-coded system parameters to be
imported into XyWrite. Version 2.5 adds two substantial new
applications: TAGFILES automates the "sneaker-net" routine
well-known to anyone who shuttles documents on diskette between
two or more computers (and an example of the structured
programming that's possible in Help-based XPL). STORESGT writes
the contents of stay-resident ("ordinary" and "permanent")
Save/Gets to disk for overnight storage and instant retrieval on
demand. Used together, these frames make startup a dynamic
process that "remembers" where you left off and whisks you back
-- even if you resume at a different workstation.

Other new frames include an enhanced ABort command that avoids
inadvertent data loss without intrusive prompts, a quick 'n'
dirty 4- function calculator with an editable, printable "tape",
a program that gives easy access to an undocumented reverse-video
character set, a routine that makes all 21 SEarch wildcards
available via a single key, and many more. There are extensive
revisions and improvements to existing routines, including a
revamped user help facility for Windows and DOS.

Enjoy!
