DOS window question

I had to re-install Windoze recently have difficulties getting the DOS
command working as it did before. In particular, DOS now claims not to be
able to find other directories. If I create an AUTOEXEC.BAT file containing
"path d:\docs,d:\xy3,d:\xy4,d:\ref, d:\utils", I get a "too many
parameters" error message.
What is going on?
