Footnote crash bug

Here is a bug that I find hard to characterize in the way K. would like, but
I'll describe it anyway in hope that others may have more input. My system
configuration was given in my posting stamped 11/12/96 at 11:08:44 EST, and
I will not repeat it here.

I have a large document (90,000 words in 300 pages) with two sets of
footnotes. Set 1 uses multiple asterisks restarting on each page and set 2
uses ongoing numbers, which appear as endnotes. There are about 300
numbered footnotes and a significantly smaller number of asterisk footnotes.
I have never had a "page element" warning, but I'm probably close.

Sometimes (that fatal word) when I have been editing a previously entered
FN2 footnote I close it [Shift-F1] and find that my screen now is positioned
not at this footnote, but at some other one! I think it is usually a
previous one, but not the one just before. And then when I try to scroll
around, I find that I can't scroll backward more than a screen or two,
forward only to the end of the screen (I think), and sometimes the cursor is
locked. Sometimes the keyboard is locked and I can't even save and restart.

Of course, it would be nice to know more about "sometimes." I think, but
I'm not sure, that it has something to do with FN1 set. It may happen only
if I have just previously visited Set 1, but I can't be sure of this. I
have noticed that Set 1 sometimes uses the asterisk symbol in my draft text
as I defined it and sometimes instead uses a reverse mode superscript 2.
This may or may not be related to when I get the FN2 misbehavior. My
attention when this happens is usually not on making it happen again, but on
retrieving my work. I've also noticed that sometimes the Set 1 symbol
appears as a whole string of asterisks for no good reason. These footnotes
all print out on paper OK, though.

What should I intelligently try to look for? Jim.
