Yes. You should also carefully cook a three-course meal and then
throw it in the trash without touching it...

But seriously, I do have sympathy with the millions who are confused
by Windows' often opaque ways of doing things. What you really should
do first is simply rename CONFIG.SYS to CONFIG.BAK (or any other name
you'll recognize later) and then reboot your computer to see if

 a) the system starts up without problems, and
 b) you don't get the EMS error message any more.

If so, hunky dory. If not (after all, your CONFIG.SYS may contain
other stuff required by your computer) then you should issue the
following command at a DOS prompt: copy CONFIG.BAK CONFIG.SYS. This
will restore your CONFIG.SYS and also leave you with a backup that
you may need later if you mess up things. Now go into CONFIG.SYS and
edit it (you do have a piece of software starting with "X" that is
handy for this purpose...). Look for the lines mentioned in Robert
Orndorff's message or also other lines that possibly install a
third-party memory manager. Try placing a "REM" in front of these
lines, which will render them inactive (the computer simply skips
what's in them). You might also want to reproduce the contents of
your CONFIG.SYS here and let us have a shot at it.
