Re: XyWrite 4.11 for Windows

This is my first posting to this list, of whose existence I
learned just a few days ago. I am a translator residing in Japan
and have been a XyWrite addict from the days of version 2.
Frankly, my enthusiasm for the program as well as for its
publishers has waned somewhat, but I still stick with it for text
input because I have yet to find something that matches its
combination of sheer power, flexibility, speed, and kookiness
(character, if you wish).

I am using XyWrite for DOS 4.015 as my main workhorse, and
occasionally
XyWrite for Windows to do Windowish things with text that I
created in
Xy4DOS. While I appreciate the compatibility in file formats
between the
DOS and Windows versions of Xy, I would like to second the
comments made by Eric K. Glunt to the effect that XyWrite for
Windows version 4.11 still seems rather rough around the edges. I
also had severe problems with menu driven search and replace (the
program would hang every time I started to type text in a
"search" or "replace" box). However, I was able to fix this by
downloading a newer version of the XWDLG.DLG file from the
Technology Group BBS. The one I use now is dated 4-02-94, and it
lets me do menu driven search and replace without lockups.

Unfortunately, upgrading XWDLG.DLG did nothing for another
problem I am having, namely faxing from Xy4Win, using any Windows
fax program such as WinFax Pro or Procomm Plus for Windows
version 2.0. Whenever I fax something, the first page comes out
fine but text on all subsequent pages is 'grayed out' (printed in
a kind of black-on-gray reverse style that is almost impossible
to read and increases transmission times to ridiculous levels). I
contacted Tech Support and was told that the problem is known and
seems to be related to a combination between
Xy4Win and certain video card drivers at certain resolutions (I
have an older Diamond Speedstar card which I run at 800x600).

My communication with Tech Support about this problem took place
some time ago, and I was told that I would be kept informed, but
so far I have heard nothing about any solution. I certainly hope
that the imminent release of version 4.12 will fix this problem
for me. (Just for the record, the faxing problem does not occur
with WordPerfect for Windows or Word for Windows using the same
fonts, the same video card and resolution, and the same fax
programs.)
