HP LJ4

Dear Mr. Lynch,

Unfortunately, XyWrite III+ has some internal constraints with respect to
printer drivers. There is a 64k buffer reserved for the storage of mode,
width, substitution, and font definition information. The Laserjet 4, with
it's 45 scalable proportional typefaces and 34 symbol sets, requires memory
storage far beyond the current capabilities of XyWrite III+. After careful
research and testing, it has been determined that major changes would need to
be incorporated into the executable code to properly support this printer. As
an example, a LaserJet 4 driver which has support for each font in one point
size (8pt) and one symbol set (8U), exceeds the 64k buffer limit. On a good
note, you can use the HP LaserJet IIIP to print to this printer. As you
probably already know, this driver will allow you to print, but you will not be
able to access all the additional typefaces that are in the LaserJet 4.

Support for this new technology has been incorporated into the new XyWrite 4.0
- including a driver for the LaserJet 4. XyWrite 4.0 is a logical upgrade path
for XyWrite III+ and Signature users who wish to use the new state of the art
output devices, such as the LaserJet 4.
