RE Memory issues

Robert wrote, "the undependability of no-name hardware!" Touché. Well,
maybe. After perusing the scanty documentation that came with GoBack
(which I went and got, and am now regretting), I suspect it may have been
that that made the MBR invisible. That may also be what's hogging almost
100K of my lower 640K of RAM. I have a long-standing prejudice against
"utilities," and the more I see of them, the more I think I'm justified.
However--and this also pertains to what Jordan said about dumbed-down
BIOSes--I have a book (Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs, 13th
ed) that says that ACPI is "a standard method for integrating power
management as well as system configuration features throughout a PC,
including the hardware, operating system, and application software. ACPI
goes far beyond the previous standard, called Advanced Power Management
(APM),...[ACPI] not only controls power, but also all the Plug and Play
hardware configuration throughout the system. With ACPI, system
configuration (Plug and Play)...is no longer controlled by the BIOS
setup; it is controlled entirely within the operating system instead." If
so, then Harry may call me paranoid if he likes, but Big Brother Bill has
taken another step toward making Windows firmware.
Will check where the USB is loaded in the new machine next time I have
it on (only one monitor, and KVM switch is too slow for the new one's
FSB, so I have to turn this off and swap the monitor connction to turn
the other on).
