Fast Save should _never_ be used, for several reasons. You do this in Tools >
Options > Save and making sure that "Allow fast saves" is UNchecked. It's off
by default in recent versions. (Background saves are OK).

But your example is more likely something added to the document by features
called Comments and Tracked Changes. So in addition, you need to make sure
that you've removed all comments and tracked changes before you send out a
document. Exactly how you do this depends on what version of Word you're using
(the easiest way is simply to never use these features, although sometimes they
are handy). There are third party utilities that will do it for you, as well
as cleaning up the multitude of "metadata" that lurks everywhere in a .doc file.

XyWrite documents can also contain "hidden text" (in LAbels) and metadata
(after the EOF marker), but since they are rarely exchanged in native form
(even when XyWrite was more popular, people generally didn't work that way) it
has never been an issue.
