A RegEx, as it's sometimes called, is a (probably) unix-ish version of
wildcard. Many unix and dos scripting languages use them - perl, for
instance. In conjuction with scripting langages, regular expressions are
more powerful even than the Xy4 wildcards. WinSearch adds RegEx capability
for text searches to find files.
