Why the ital. pgm at all?

Nathan:
What is the larger purpose of the ital.pgm? Isn't it just as easy to type a
character, like ctrl-I, for the start of the italics, and then when ready
to end them type ctrl-N (puts in )?
If you are adding them to already typed text, when you put in the font
change at the beginning, you temporarily see a change reaching to the end
of file. But so what--when you put in the  it goes away.
