xy3 installation problems

hi all,

brand-new listee, first-time poster. in fact, i joined the list primiarly
because i have a rather daunting (well, for me) problem that i'm trying to
tackle. if there's anyone who can provide any advice, it would be enormously
appreciated. i suppose i'm a newbie at this -- in that i've been a XyWrite and
Atex user for a long time, but i've never done any under-the-hood work -- so i
apologize in advance if this question is relatively chump-change. but here's
the deal:

i recently picked up QuickPad Pro (http://www.quickpad.com), with the hope of
being able to use it as a mobile XyWrite terminal. it's a neat little machine.
for a summary, the QuickPad Pro (QP) is a "keyboard with a screen"; it runs
for about 100 hours on four AA batteries. it runs a version of DOS from ROM,
along with a few simple applications, and with a little work and coaxing, it's
capable of running many other DOS-friendly applications. whenever DOS apps
aren't fully compatible with the QP, it's usually because of either the QP's
68180 processor or monochrome 60x16 (CGA) screen.

so i guess my first question is: do you see any hard obstacles so far?

i've downloaded many files from xywrite.com, and i've followed the directions
found on the web page, "How to Assemble a XyWrite System On-The-Fly" (located
at http://users.datarealm.com/xywwweb/xylite.shtml ), and i think i've safely
concluded that xy4 won't work on the QP, etiology unknown.

i still have hope for xy3, although (a) the instructions on the web page are
explicitly for xy4, and (b) the web page mentions that "A XyWrite III+ system
can be created as well, using similar means and procedures", although of all
the xy3 zip archives i've downloaded, none of them contain XYDOSX.EXE or
INSTALL.EXE . (there is a file called "X2D.EXE" (sp?) in xywrite.com's
DISK1.ZIP archive, but it just hangs the QP.)

i've done a fair amount of research on this topic (i've toed through the web,
usenet, and XySearch), and i'm at the point where i don't know where else to
look. if you have any advice, tips, references, suggestions, comments, flames,
et al., i'd be more than happy to hear them. i don't want to give up on this
QP quite yet.

thanks,
cam
