Well, unfortunately, the disks TTG sent out for 4.17 have compressed
files on them that DO need to "be installed." And I suspect that (like
many DOS apps of that vintage) the installation routine makes use of DOS
protected mode (interestingly, the installation bombs if run under
Microsoft DOS 6.2--probably why TTG switched to Novell 7). And apparently
that causes problems in 32-bit Windows too, even if you do it from a DOS
Window. There was a posting here last week or so from some poor chap who
was trying to install under Windows ME (the buggiest excuse for an OS
even Micro$oft has dared inflict on a hapless public), which was what
prompted my exercise. I've never tried to "install" under 32-bit Win.
When I first "upgraded" to Win 95, I simply copied my existing Xy4DOS
directory to a ZIP drive and thence to the hard drive of my new PC. Same
with XyWin (whose installation manual, significantly, mentions having to
"ignore" error messages if installing under Win 95). Yes, EDITOR.EXE and
the printer drivers are uncompressed, but the menus are useful when doing
something one doesn't do every day, and I certainly want the hyphenation
algorithms, which are the best I know of (even coming up with better
breaks than the parent Atex system could).
